Would you like to have device to be powered separately? If all you need is an alarm, and reset of the counter doesn't need to be used when no power aplyied - it may be convenient to connect the board (through any USB phone changer) to the same outlet and count the time of the board's ON time. In that case you need minumum external components, and connection will be safer, simpler and more reliable (because no necessity to make an additional connection of AC to the board). Also, the whole working and debugging time will be shorter, so the price also can be lower. Also, I would propose to add a simple 7-seg or OLED display to your device to show the current (counted) time I have great experience in creation, modification and remote debug of the code for Arduino I have made more than 200 Arduino-based projects on different freelance stocks. Hi, it takes some time to build and test it since I do actually build all the devices, so I can provide photos of the connections, the components and eventually the links where you can find parts, plus a video where is shown @ work. About the device I think that Arduino's fits it better (is way cheaper and more reliable). One information: do you want the Arduino to be always ON and sense the mains presence or the Arduino will be powered by mains and therefore start counting when power is ON ? Also it makes a big difference if you want a display or just a LED+Buzzer Cheers, Alex.

Hello, I really like your idea of hour meter, do you plan to have the device have his own power and sense when the 110 v available?, or it will be powered by the same 110 v ? in that case I will suggest the arduino , as the Raspberry Pi will corrupt the micro sd card at power outage.
