The Species 2000 ([login to view URL]) and ITIS ([login to view URL]) joint project is to gather all the information into one place fitting certain limited criteria for the 1.7 million named species. They are already past the 1 million mark of species.
I have a sort of unusual belief on how new species are produced. I believe like most scientists now I think, that speciation occurs rapidly after mass extinction episodes. This speciation occurs only when the earth returns to its normal range of temperatures and climates. Then, many new niches are opened up because of the disappearance of species that filled them in the past.
What's different about my view, is that I believe even though viral, radiation, and DNA replication errors make up the raw material of evolution, they are never enough to turn one species into another. Perhaps they might be able to produce many kinds of finches like the ones on Galapagos (whose crosses are all fertile), but to produce really big changes, I think you need hybridization of "unrelated" species.
So at any rate, species are classified first into kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. I would like to get the million species into a gedcom 5.5 file with the great-great-great-great grandfather, phylum name would be the great-great-great grandfather, class name would be the name of the great-great grandfather, order name would be the great grandfather's name, family would be the grandfather's name, genus would be the father's name and species name would be a son.
The GenXML 2.0 genealogy format is XML based. I'm hoping that tab delineated species data that I can get access to, can be easily be changed into that XML format. That is what I'd like you to do. Once its in GenXML 2.0 format, it can be converted into GEDCOM 5.5 by this program: <[login to view URL]>. GenXML 2.0 is discussed here: <[login to view URL]>.
## Deliverables
See the summary. Please ask me questions. I plan to let users change the sex of the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species in order to make the crosses work in a genealogy program.
You can download ll the plant species in one tab file here: <[login to view URL]>
There is a piece of software here: [login to view URL], that will import a kind of genealogy XML called GenXML 2.0. It can then convert it to GEDCOM 5.5, which is what I'm really after. The schema can be viewed and downloaded here: <[login to view URL]> and here: <[login to view URL]>
