PHPweb based Dictionary

An innovative online foriegn language dictionary comprised of two parts - dictionary which is a user friendly web application where users can type in a few letters of a word and the page will search for matches within the database. Definitions are stored in a heavily normalized database structure where each word in the definition is actually a word within the datatbase. Users can click on each word within the definition to recursively search for additional definitions. word types (i.e. nouns, verbs, etc are highlights by color or other attributes so that a person reading the definition can see the type of word each word within the defitiion is. Additional structure for images of the word and a sound bite are supported. the second phase of the application is a maintenance application that supports building the definitions. the application will run under a post nuke application which will control access to the dictionary and maintenance applciations. database stucture will be provided, but developer is welcome to suggest changes as needed. ## Deliverables 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete source code of all work done. 2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition, as follows (depending on the nature of the deliverables): a) For web sites or other server-side deliverables intended to only ever exist in one place in the Buyer's environment--Deliverables must be installed by the Seller in ready-to-run condition in the Buyer's environment. b) For all others including desktop software or software the buyer intends to distribute: A software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request. 3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Notes for Dictionary Application… This application is primarily a user interface intensive application. Ease of use is most important and the use of scripting and other innovative techniques will be necessary to make the application easy to use and functional. Central to this application is the ability to recursively pull definitions from the database not only by direct SEARCH query, but my clicking on each word within the displayed definition. This will allow the user to probe deeper into the language by using multiple definition of multiple words to “discover?? the meaning of a word WITHOUT leaving that language and resorting to an English language translation. This is most important!. Additionally, images and sounds related to the words are support. The second critical part of this project is the maintenance application for building the dictionary. This application will build the definition by selecting existing words from the dictionary. That is, not free from typing of definition will be supported. We will manually seed the database with 300 to 500 words for this purpose, but from that point on, only those words may be used to create definitions. Also, the text of the individual words will be stored with delimiters to break the syllables into their proper section, and the accented syllable will be identified by preceding that syllable with a different delimiter/identifier. Example: NATURALE will be stored na.tur.^al.e. When displayed, the words will be shown with and without the delimiters, side-by-side.
