Extending Linux partition with LVM on a fresh new disk.

Hi, there is no way to convert online fs to lvm. Only with formatting and data loss. But you can mount new disk inside /var/ as subfolder. Also using lvm on 2 harddrives without redundancy more risky, atleast probability as twice bigger of loosing whole fs because of one harddrive failure

I can do it, I have yet done it many times. Obviously the actual /var/ partition has to be LVM, and, IMPORTANT, it's not a reccomended configuration as you could lose data of the whole partition if you have failures on just one disk of the two.

I have done this several times on critical systems. Unless the original disk was configured from the start to use LVM, The way to do it is to create the LVM partition on the new disk, transfer the data over and then add the old disk as an lvm partition. Then you will have 6 TB filesystem

HI, I will be able to complete the project for you within 1 or 2 days. As I can see that /var is not LVM, so we have to copy the data out and recreate /var as LVM and then it will be easy for any future extensions. I can also provide with the documentation of the work that will be performed. Thanks

It will be done online, without any downtime, only, if disk is already presented (SAN or local, it's never mind) to the operating system, and OS is not to old, to implement online resize (otherwise, required a LiveCD an a downtime)

Bonjour! I have good experience with vmware, xen, xenserver, xcp, kvm and other virtualizations and I worked with a lot of virtual machines in the past, we own a small datacenter here. Regarding your issue, luckily you still have some space left. The bad news is that if you didn't create LVM in the first place, you can't magically insert it, partitions are created, filesystems are created. One solution would be to reinstall system with LVM but I believe that there are more reasons to not do it, than to do it. Another solution is to create a new partition and either to make some scripts that cleanup and divide the usage or to modify your program settings to use both partitions in a better, more balanced way. I will also setup log rotation and compression if logs take up a considerable amount of space. Besides these basic ideas, we will have to check the server together and set an action plan. My goal would be to minimize downtime, I'm not sure though if this is something you care. Please accept me and let's work together. I am available this weekend also. Thank you! Ciprian
