Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to practice synthesizing and investigating foundational readings in Gender and Women’s Studies. Assignment: A literature review is less about proving an argument than it is about demonstrating your familiarity with a field. For your final project, you will be completing a literature review to demonstrate your understanding of some of the major writing and conversations in Women’s and Gender Studies. You will work on this paper/project in phases. Think of a literature review as a focused exploration of a specific question or line of questioning that you see occurring across various sources: how are the writers we have read thinking about masculinity? Embodiment? Ableness? The intersectional experience of black women? The connections between gender and language? Etc... Your job, as the author here, is less to create a unique argument than to diagnose what the important conversations in the field are and to connect how different thinkers have approached and answered key questions. You should include at least 5 sources from throughout the semester into your paper. Paper Structure 1. Introduction— a. Part 1—Establish your Territory: Identify your territory: what kinds of issues will your literature review be exploring and what writers/thinkers will you be including. b. Part 2—Identify your Question: What key question(s) will your literature review be exploring? c. Part 3—Explain the Importance of your Question: Identify why your question is an important one to explore 2. Body (PEAS paragraphs) a. Each Paragraph should include at least 3 thinkers (you can repeat thinkers across paragraphs if it is relevant to your conversation). • Remember that I will be looking for PEAS in your body paragraphs (meaning all paragraphs that are not your Intro or your Conclusion).
