Did this work, 5 years ago. The schematic, that'll be provided to you has already been tested to transmit the ASCII data using a simple laser. Controller used for the purpose of receiving and displaying the data on LCD(or whatever display you choose) will be Arduino. We can use ARM or any other advanced micro-controller also, if you need, however Arduino is cheapest.
