We just moved into this 20 year old single story home. The existing (gas) fireplace, hearth, mantle and built-in bookcases are not our style. We'd like something way more contemporary, like what's shown in the attached 'after' image.
You can also see from the attachment the wall dimensions we have to work with:16'6" Wide x 10' High ceiling x 30" Depth
We're looking to remove the existing gas fireplace insert and replace it with a LINEAR, electric (or gas) insert that's at least 72" wide.
We do not want a traditional mantle, shelf, surround or hearth around above fireplace;
Fireplace should be not very high from floor as we want to mount a TV above the fireplace, but want bottom edge of TV to be about 36" from the floor (i.e., we don't want to have to crane our necks and look up at the TV when sitting on the sofa).
Would also like some low, base cabinetry, with wood or dark glass doors, on either/both sides of fireplace... a place to put DVR, DVD, etc. equipment out of sight , that allows connections through the wall to the TV (i.e., no visible cables).
Above base cabinet(s) would be some sort of contemporary 'stacked stone', perhaps with a few 'floating shelves' mounted in the stonework.
Also wonder about having some sort of 'seating' on top of one or both of the base cabinets.
This is a fairly large room so we really don't need the seating above the base cabinets.
Not sure what to put on the fireplace/tv wall... ceramic (as pictured) or some sort of other surface that compliments the stacked stone on each side
Also are flexible on whether walls on each side of fireplace/TV wall are symmetrical or not;
You'll note from floor plan that the existing fireplace wall protrudes about 30" from the back wall, the two built in bookcases are recessed/indented about 5". For our new design, we'd be ok with either keeping this indentation; or making the entire wall 'the same depth. This is probably the biggest question mark for us. From the remodeler's perspective, it would probably be much less framing if we were able to keep the existing 'relief' but we're open to whatever.
Color pallet for rest of the room is gray, medium blue, muted yellow.
After settling on a design, would like to be able to give a plan with a decent amount of detail to our remodeler.
As far as the design, we are willing to pay for more than one option, as there are probably several directions you might suggest we go with this.
