Proposal design

Topic Your ideas should express something you can form a strong opinion about. These could be personal, social, political, environmental, cultural, etc. You will use tools of visual composition to emphasize your position on the topic you have selected. All your sketches should be on the same topic. Process There are multiple weeks in which to complete this project, and as a result, the process has been broken up into manageable pieces for you to work with. 1. Come up with an idea or message that you want to express visually. 2. Look and see how this topic is typically portrayed or talked about. Do research through the internet, newspaper, magazines, books or even talking to others to understand different potential stances on the topic (minimum of 2 sources). Take notes, sketches and photos as part of your research as you will need to submit these. 3. From the Graphic Design Thinking reading, use one of the how to get ideas methods - forced connections, action verbs, icon-index-symbol, visual diary - to fill up two pages of paper (of reasonable size) with your visual ideas. 4. Taking into consideration the readings on design and composition from this week,imagine and show us 30 possible photographs in sketches that would communicate your idea or message. Remember: 1. A photograph has a frame (draw it) 2. Getting stuck? try the techniques we practiced 3. Annotate anything that we may not understand 4. Aim for quantity and quality of sketches 5. Summarize your idea or message and why you believe it is a good concept to pursue, things to potentially include: 1. Examples of sketches or research that supports why it is a good concept 2. What might help others understand your message? 3. How did your process influence the message or idea? 4. Why might your sketches illustrate the message clearly? Make sure all your deliverables are clearly titled and, or, labelled to help us understand which step of the process it is associated with: 1. A clear and concise description of your idea or message (max 100 words) 2. A collection of your research notes including sources (using proper formats) 3. All your sketches (with annotations and titling as necessary) 4. A summary of why your message or idea is a strong one (250 words maximum) Please remember that any component that makes use of others' ideas should reference them clearly using appropriate and consistent formatting (i.e. MLA or APA). Grading Rubric This assignment is worth 10% of your final grade, with each requirement receiving points as outlined below. • Quality of concept; clarity and understanding of idea or message (1 point) • Research materials; clarity of presentation and depth of research (2 points) • Design process; quality and quantity (4 points) • Chosen concept; clarity and quality of explanation for why it is a good direction (2 points) • Quality of deliverable; clear titling and understandable structure (1 point)
