Create a print driver for Mac OS

Hello I am an OS X system developer I have experience with the cups system and had created mac os printer drivers. One of the projects I had worked on was a printer supporting application - I created a cups filter, a custom cups backend that communicated with the printer device, and even a user panel that showed printer specific settings in the "Print" dialog. What is specific to these bar code printers and what models are needed to be supported? Do they accept PostScript, or they use some custom protocol?
