You need to develop a portfolio that adheres to one of the options listed below, by containing either two or three pieces of writing that each represent a different genre. These pieces are discussed in class and developed both in and outside class time. Your portfolio pieces must adhere to the writing tasks set throughout the duration of the semester. Ideally you should have a number of pieces/genres to choose from and it is appropriate that you include the best examples in your portfolio. You also need to develop a 500 word critical reflection that addresses the genres you have chosen, the pieces of writing you created and how they developed as pieces of writing. Discussing their form and genre is required and this can be best done by comparing and contrasting each piece of writing. This is a good way to engage with your work, identify what constitutes good writing, and apply good writing principles. Instructions Select one of the follow options: 1. Develop and submit three 500 word pieces of writing that each represent a different genre. Include a 500 word critical reflection. OR 2. Develop and submit one 1000 word literary essay and one 500 word piece of writing that represents a different genre. Include a 500 word critical reflection. Rationale The aim of this assessment task is to provide students with the opportunity to: • Write at a level that meets professional expectations with respect to grammar, spelling, sentence construction, accuracy, and clarity. • Write effectively across a range of genres. • Write competently in a range of registers, from formal to informal*. • Identify what constitutes good writing in and outside of their professional fields. • Be able to apply good writing principles. * The fact that different genres are required in the portfolio means that there will be shifts in register/tone relevant to the genre undertaken. The critical reflection will also require adopting an appropriate register that ideally is both engaging (requiring a degree of informality) as well as formal enough to precisely identify the genres undertaken.
