Script should have the name "GenerateIndex". The first command line argument will be the name of the index files. For example, your might choose the name "[url removed, login to view]". The remaining command line arguments will be a list of file names. If there are no remaining command line arguments, it is assumed that all files are to be indexed. Otherwise the remaining command line arguments represent the list of files to be indexed. For example, "GenerateIndex [url removed, login to view] *.pdf *.html *.ps *.tex" is a script for generating an index of pdf, html, ps, and tex files. (Note that there are tricks using indirection and the like to get this to work for subdirectories without the added quotes or backslashes and in the Korn shell and C shells you can save the exact text of previous commands so you could refer to *.pdf rather than the expanded version of *.pdf, but to simplify your task you may assume that the user has written \*.pdf etc. or put quotes around the arguments.) What Directories Need an Index File? Your home directory, any subdirectory, any subsubdirectory, any subsubsubdirectory of your home directory and so on and so forth. When Do You Need to Create an Index File? Any relevant directory that does not already have a file whose name is the same as your first command line argument need to have created for it an index file; thus, if your first command line argument is "[url removed, login to view]", then if a directory already has a file called "[url removed, login to view]", you are not to create a new index or modify the existing index. What Files Need to be Indexed in the Index File? You can ignore dot files (files beginning with "."). But except for dot files, all files with names specified at the command line by the arguments other than the first need to be indexed. If there is no second argument, then all files are to be indexed. How Does One Index a File in the Index File? If a file is named FAVORITEFILE and it needs to be indexed in the index file, there will be an entry that looks like this: < a href="FAVORITEFILE" > FAVORITEFILE < /a > < br > Note that the quotes matter. The letters br will force a line break. How are File Links Arranged in the Index Files? Alphabetically in the standard way. What Should be the Name of the Index Files? The necessary name is specified as the first command line argument.
