**The software to be written**

The purpose of the software is to create a standalone application to display music or video categories of titles based on data from an SQL-based database. The user will select a category and then an item, and retrieve details of that item.

You will also create a separate application to display categories and titles via the use of remote RMI-based service objects. This will enable you to become familiar with the process of creating and locating remote objects via the RMI technology. One of the aspects of this section is the fact that the application logic will be potentially spread across processors, rather than based on one workstation, giving us the potential to use thin, web-based clients and speed development of future applications via object reuse.

**Concepts to employ**

Your software should make use of the concepts outlined at the start of the assignment brief above. Some of these can be outlined as:

· you should have a generic class to access data categories, which can be subclassed into differing types according to what is needed at runtime.

· You will employ RMI based techniques to retrieve objects.

· All java coding should follow appropriate standards for layout and documentation, according to those indicated at the Sun website <[url removed, login to view]>

**What to complete for the assignment**

* An application which will access a JDBC-compliant SQL database, for the database supplied.

* An application which will employ RMI to access a database, sharing the workload between a server and client
