In an essay that includes a thesis and specific evidence from your chosen text, identify the author’s specific audience and argument. You must also analyze how he or she builds that argument. In other words, what is the argument being made by the text and how is this text making the argument? You are not being asked to evaluate whether the essay or its argument are “good” or “bad”, but rather to determine what elements of rhetoric it is employing how successful it is at making its argument through these elements.
We will discuss rhetorical elements and devices at length during class, but some questions you may want to consider in your paper are:
• Audience: Who is the intended audience for this piece? Why did the writer choose that audience?
• Purpose: Why was this piece written? What is it trying to convince us of?
• Organization: Did the arrangement of ideas, or the order in which the author developed them create some sort of an effect? What purpose does it serve? Why did the author arrange his/her ideas this way?
• Diction: What kind of language does the author use? Is it formal? Informal? Is there a lot of jargon? Slang? Are certain words repeated? What are the effects of these language choices?
• Sentences: How are the sentences structured? Are there a lot of questions? Commands? Declaratives? Are they noticeably long or short? What effect does the sentence structure have on you as a reader?
• Citations: Does the writer cite any other sources? What are they? Why would he/she invoke these sources?
These are simply meant as questions to help you generate ideas, not as a template for the organization of your paper. Some of these questions may prove irrelevant to your chosen text, and some important questions may be absent from this list.
Requirements: This essay should be in Times New Roman, 12-pt. font, double-spaced, and 3-4 pages. You will be using MLA in-text citations to cite your chosen text; however, a Works Cited will not be necessary.
