Debug an existing website
I have an existing website developed in php using Codeigniter. In simple terms, the site works as follows:
a. Using an admin panel, the administrator uploads data which populates a MySQL data base. This data is updated quarterly and covers the values of a selected range of used cars – makes and models – drawn from a range of countries
b. This data provides the coordinates for maps and graphs which are rendered using Fusion Charts
c. The user accesses the site and is taken to a summary page showing various charts that calculate data for the countries as ‘averages’ or other grouped categories. The user then selects the specific data that he or she wishes to see. The user selects a country, a make and a model and the site then renders a range of graphs giving the latest quarterly data for the selection made.
The Bugs:
There are a number of defects and faults that became clear after the site was populated with substantial volumes of actual data:
User Side:
a. Summary Page: This is the page that the user arrives at immediately after login. The charts load inconsistently. For example, from time to time, some charts do not load at all or the charts load very slowly. When the charts do load, they include data on a country for which no data has been entered. The charts also omit data which has been entered. My guess is that there are two types of errors. The first concerns the process that renders the graphs. The second is some errors in the way that fields are ‘mapped’ to the graphs.
b. Specific Page: This page also loads inconsistently. From time to time it fails to ask for the user settings but, when it does ask for the user settings, it will not load the data that has been uploaded via the administration panel. Just as importantly, if and when the charts do load, the user cannot switch to display data on any other makes, models or countries. It appears that the earlier selections remain fixed. Another issue is that charts are not rendered for some data, even if it has been uploaded via the admin panel.
c. A table displaying a Price Matrix for a user selected make and model does not include all the values required. It misses a complete line of values.
d. The site currently functions under Mozilla Firefox. It does not function consistently and the pages do not load consistently under IE8
e. When the administrator adds data the site requires page reload before they become effective.
f. The Admin panel requires data to be added one value at a time, line by line. This needs to be modified so that data can also be added using csv files and so that common data does not have to be re-keyed.
