Background

LDL cholesterol is the "bad cholesterol. It tends to deposit in the walls of arteries. This process starts as early as childhood or adolescence. White blood cells swallow and try to digest the LDL, possibly in an attempt to protect the blood vessels. In the process, the white blood cells convert the LDL to a toxic (oxidized) form. Over time, more LDL cholesterol and cells collect in the area. The process creates a bump in the artery wall called a plaque. Plaque is made of cholesterol, the body's cells, and debris. The process continues, growing the plaque and slowly blocking the artery. ([url removed, login to view]).

Increased LDL cholesterol levels has been associated with increased long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. Most notably, findings from the seminal Framingham study have led to the use of LDL cholesterol as one of the most useful factors for predicting risk of coronary heart disease. The widespread adoption of statins over the last decade has led to more people able to maintain their LDL cholesterol levels at the healthy range. However, since statins may have side-effect and its cost is not very cheap, especially for people in developing countries, there are still a lot of interest in understanding what factors causes the variations in LDL cholesterol levels in apparently healthy individuals. Identification of these factors could lead to better recommendation for general public on how to maintain their cholesterol levels without the need to resort to medication.

As part of our on-going research, my research team have collected clinical and demographic data for a number of apparently healthy individuals (i.e., these individuals have not been clinically diagnosed with any diseases). We are interested in identifying factors that would lead to better management of LDL cholesterol levels. I am really desperate for statistical helps as nobody in my research group as enough statistical expertise. We have tried some simple analyses such as t-test but without convincing results. Some of my colleagues also think that factors that are strongly associated with LDL levels are things such as body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio, something that we do not currently have in the dataset but I believe they can be created easily enough from the existing variables.

I would be very happy if you could contribute your expertise in helping me answering my research questions above and of course I will include in any subsequent publications that come out of this project should we have publishable results.
