Integrate vCenter API into monitoring application

We utilize an open source monitoring applicaton that gathers information via SNMP. We seek to extend this monitoring application, which is currently updated by another organization via Git.
We would like to be able to add a vCenter instance into the monitoring application and pull data from the vCenter API such that we can monitor entire clusters through a single management plane. Statistics gathered should include Disk, Network, CPU and other information for VM's, a display of all VM's and Hypervisors apart of the VMware cluster, and a way for customer alerting based on predefined limits within the monitoring application.
This work should be done in a very modular fashion, such that the upstream git updates do not interfere with our plugins.
