MuseumsEtc is a successful and respected publisher of books for museum and gallery professionals worldwide. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, our current list comprises over 75 titles and this number is being rapidly increased with many new titles ready for production.

One of our most important current projects is to create a new edition (paperback and eBook) of an iconic 200-page text on photography originally published some 40 years ago and now long out of print. (We have the right to reproduce the work.)

We are therefore looking for a freelancer (working remotely) who is experienced both in using InDesign (ideally in an academic book publishing context) and in using Photoshop to sensitively enhance historic images. The successful applicant will have a passionate concern for accuracy and quality in both text and images, and a sensitive eye for restrained but stylish page layout.

Page styles and templates for the new edition are already setup. Working from a high-quality PDF of the original publication, your task will be to:

1. Export the original publication's text and (mono) images and place them into the InDesign pages for new edition.

2. Check the placed text for accuracy against the original and correct where required.

3. Adjust the placed copies of the images for clarity, contrast and overall quality where necessary and possible.

3. Make decisions on the attractive and informative positioning - and where necessary resizing - of the images (with accompanying captions) on a page-by-page basis based on the templates which have been established.

4. Transmit - in packaged file format - all work on a daily basis, including masters of all pages and edited images.

The original publication consists of 200 A4 sized pages and is illustrated with over 250 black and white images.

We are keen to begin this work as soon as possible. There is likely to be an ongoing requirement for similar freelance work on future publications.

Applications should be sent as soon as possible and contain:

1. A summary and examples of relevant experience

2. An estimate of the proposed timescale for the project

3. Details of the remuneration required.

The successful applicant will be asked to undertake the creation of one short chapter (on a paid basis) before the formal contact begins. Once contracted, in the (unlikely) event that the work produced is of an unacceptable quality the contract may be terminated with immediate effect at any stage.
