There is a client with an existing logo, website is located at http://custommetalfabricators.com/
The existing logo has a tool called a Micrometer in it, which is used to symbolize precision, which is a big thing in this industry. The owner wishes to have the micrometer in the logo, but is open to adaption or other ideas. We have already spend a considerable amount of time designing for this job and have been unable to come up with anything that we consider to be great work.
This logo will be used on a new website, car decals, and a building sign.
We are thinking that metallic would be nice, here are two examples of metallic/chrome we think would look good.

Here is correspondence with the client, starting from oldest to newest:
CLIENT:
I am leaning towards modernizing our existing logo, but am also open to evaluating creative alternatives. The incorporation of the micrometer in our existing logo (pasted below) is symbolic to our business model and represents a source of differentiation, e.g. high quality, precision sheet metal fabrication services. To the extent a new logo is developed, I would like it to continue to convey the quality-focused, precision nature of our work.

CLIENT:
As you work through ideas to improve the logo, attached is a rough sketch we developed internally for new a sign to be placed outside the building on Whitepine Road. We would fabricate the sign out of stainless steel, weld it together and potentially incorporate some LED lighting so that it stands out at night. You’ll see the CMF logo is placed in the circle in lieu of the measurement dial.
The planning on this project is still very preliminary, but nevertheless the general idea is to improve our signage to project an image of precision fabrication.

DESIGNER:
Here is a rough round one- I will continue to work on more samples but wanted to get an idea if any of these are in the right direction.
(page 3, I tried to make it look like the CMF letters are being measured and page 4, I went more toward the technical drawing mockup feel)
I really liked the look of the Buick logo here and I’m working on trying to translate it to CMF. http://www.cartype.com/pics/3252/full/buick_logo-crests.jpg
I did find it difficult to use the micrometer without it looking too cheesy, other than what you see in my samples. In my research I found that ” µm “ is the symbol for micrometer- not sure if that is stretching the idea too thin if we went that route

CLIENT:
Thanks for sending along the samples. I understand the difficulty incorporating the micrometer into the logo, but at the same time limiting the logo to “CMF” does not really convey a message about our company.
The revised logo would ideally be adaptable and be used for multiple purposes – website, advertisements, truck decals, letterhead, etc. - and therefore be capable of communicating what we do concisely through an image in conjunction with our name.
One idea is to move away from a traditional image of a micrometer and modernize it to project not only a focus of precision but also a crisp, polished look. Here’s a picture of micrometer I found on google that seems to show well.

Maybe staggering the name of the company in a diagonal direction would work (similar to the Buick logo, but in a different direction) and have the name of the company name spelled out similar to what I have shown below. The “C” could maybe be a crisp, sharp image of a micrometer similar to the one I found above….

As I indicated previously, I am open to new and creative ideas so please keep the drafts coming….Let me know if you would like to discuss further.
