I have over 25 years experience as a tool and die/mold maker. And have been using CAD software since 1991, AutoCad since 1995 and 3D modeling software since 2001. While most of my mold experience is with plastic injection molds. I also designed and machined several zinc diecast molds (what you describe), as well as hand pouring the same mold with Zamac. I always design with an eye toward how a part will be made. Be it by molding, machining, or 3D printing.
