Now we have realized that we need a more robust platform. We validated the market need and want to relaunch product with redesigned hardware and packaging.

Request for Proposal
Boat Aware is a startup business dedicated to developing and building products to allow recreational boat owners stay connected to their boat from anywhere through a smartphone or tablet. Our customers place one of our Boat Aware Hubs on their vessel to enable remote monitoring and control.
We are in search of a product design and engineering partner to help take our product to a wider market. Over the past nine months we have created many hardware prototypes and enabled a small number of customers to successfully monitor their boat through our software. We are ready to design our hardware products for manufacturing and begin producing them at larger volumes than we can do in our workshop.
We hope to receive a proposal from your firm that articulates how you might help us do the following:
Electronics hardware design - Take our product requirements and help us design the electronics to deliver on our vision. This will likely include selection of electrical components, enclosure design, PCB layout, rounds of prototyping and testing, and incorporation into the final product.
Manufacturing, Certification, Testing, Assembly - Once the product design is complete we would like to begin to deliver them in increasing volume to distributors, retailers, and perhaps directly to customers.


Hardware Product Requirements
Our product line is founded with the following goals:
Ease of Installation - our customers should not need special skills in order to install and use our products.
Reliability - our products must be dependable, stand up to the harsh environments found in the marine industry, and operate reliably.
Cost Efficiency - our product hardware should be moderately priced. We understand our target audience is looking for a quality product that competes with DIY solutions.




The Hub
Our vision for the hardware product line incorporates a Hub which connects to the Internet and sends/receives data from one or more Wireless sensor modules.
Product Requirements
The Boat Aware Hub has the following requirements:
Power
Either an A/C adapter or 12V DC through connection to Boat’s battery.
Backup battery to allow the device to function for 2 hours after loss of power.
Backup battery is recharged while connected to primary power.
Internet Connectivity
3G (or higher) mobile connectivity
Support for at least 80% of coastal water on East Coast, USA.
WiFi (802.11 b/g/n 2.4Ghz, 802.11 a 5Ghz)
Wireless Module connectivity
Allows other Boat Aware sensors to send/receive data to the Hub
Must have range of 150 ft. through walls
Must support a minimum of 10 wireless modules

Our guidance would be that we need the GPS to be accurate within 10ft.

Wireless Modules
The Boat Aware product line will monitor and control your boat through the use of Wireless modules. Our goal is to create a wireless module platform which can be built upon to deliver specific sensor or control features as described in more detail below.
Product Requirements
All Wireless Modules have the following requirements:

Connects wirelessly to the Hub
Can transmit through walls and send/receive at a distance of 150 ft.
Power
Most modules will operate from a battery without auxiliary power.
The hardware must be capable of reading it’s own battery level
Batteries should be removable/replaceable and of common type (e.g. AA)
Battery life span of 1 year under average duty cycle
CPU
Runs embedded C++ application code
Sleep/Low Power Mode
Generic Input/Outputs
Minimum 4 digital Inputs
Minimum 2 analog inputs
Minimum 4 digital outputs
I2C
Serial UART for debugging
JTAG for firmware flashing

*This list represents our vision of the product. We would need any estimate to consider building all of the components listed, however: we are concerned about approaching each one as a separate item. If possible, we would like consideration given to the build of a generalized “platform” for wireless sensors. This would be in addition to estimating each item individually. This information will allow us to make more informed decisions around phasing in various modules over time vs. launching the full line all at once. It would also provide an idea of the general cost to adding to this list.

Bilge Sensor to monitor high water, current and water flow through bilge.
Some bilges are self-contained, thus we cannot measure their current. For those with external float-switches, we would install the bilge current sensor through easy-to-install wire clips (wire tap connector).
High water sensor is mounted inside of the bilge and must be waterproof
Software must allow for immediate action if water level is too high.
*(optional) water flow sensor would be attached to the bilge and monitor flow.

Weight and size are flexible. However the bilge is a small space on a boat.
Motion Sensor to monitor unwanted intrusion.

Checks temperature each 15 mins

Refrigerator/Freezer temperature sensor to ensure food stays safe
Placed on a shelf in the freezer/refrigerator.
Water Resistant (needs to be able to handle a defrost/milk spill on it)

*Camera Sensor to view internal or external photos and video.



* The Camera sensor is a market differentiator, however we would like to consider this module as a “stretch” goal. We would invite your thoughts on the implementation of this functionality, but do not want this to permeate the hardware design decisions.
System Requirements
Beyond the hardware, the finished product will allow for an internet-of-things experience for boat owners. Customers will buy the base Hub and then individually select which of the wireless sensors best suite their needs. Each wireless sensor will be configured to work with the Hub to communicate status.


The UI will be primarily the native Android/iOS app, with some LED lights on the hardware to indicate status.


There are primarily two classes of sensors we have identified.
Pollable
Users will receive data no more than 15min old, however real-time is not an expectation
Event Driven
Users will receive near-real-time data


An individual module may incorporate both types of sensors (for example: the Bilge module will poll the module on bilge runs (current presence) every 15min, but a long bilge run needs to trigger an event in the module to immediately take action.

Proof of concept development


Existing Prototype
The hardware prototypes we have built thus far have been built using off-the-shelf kits such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and various analog and digital sensors. The most recent prototype has the following capabilities in a single hardware/device:
Temperature Monitoring
PIR Motion Detector
Camera
Battery Voltage Sensor (ADC)
WiFi connectivity


The device is based on a Raspberry Pi single board computer running Linux. The system uses a WiFi network interface to send/receive information through the Internet. The operating system runs several services written in-house to handle device initialization/setup, monitoring of sensors, etc. These services were written primarily in node.js with some proof-of-concept work being done in C++


The existing prototype has a fully developed Android and iOS app.


General Concerns
Reinventing the wheel
We know there are products out there to support many of the things we require from our Internet-of-Things solution. For example: the Particle Electron could be selected to satisfy many requirements for the CPU/3G. Would stating some of own research drive design decisions that would significantly raise the costs?


Getting to market quickly
Our funding stream to support the proper phased approach to development relies on our ability to rapidly “ground” these ideas into reality. While we are looking forward to a thoughtful , phased approach to the design; our pressing needs are to get an estimated/conservative cost for building this platform.
