Custom Browser Notifications

I have a plugin called "One Signal". This sends browser notifications to users when new articles are published.

I wish to create custom categories of notifications in a new wordpress plugin.

* admin has the ability to create and delete categories;

* a default category of 'New Posts' exists and cannot be deleted;

* subscribed users can opt into Browser Notifications on on their user profile page, and if opted in then they can pick and choose the Notification Categories that they want. The New Posts category cannot be opted out of ;

* each category has a trigger. For example, a time based alert like 'Sale ends tomorrow' with a timer/schedule; or a geo-fenced alert that triggers when someone enters. These triggers will be additional php files / cron jobs that we will create over time. For this project, there is only one custom trigger to make, called "Game Week Alerts";

* the "Game Week Alerts" category is a scheduled cron job that reads from my game week table and if the current time is “game week time” - N minutes, then use the one Signal plugin to send browser alerts to the group of users subscribed to this “Game Week Alerts” category.

I intend to create many Notification Categories over the coming weeks, but for this project I want to get the base plugin and architecture correct.

For me it is important not to copy the code in the one signal plugin, but to call it so we can link into future enhancements made in the plugin.

Good coding standards must be followed, and this project has a delivery deadline of the end of this week.

* The One signal documentation refers to “sets of users”. I think this is how a category can be implemented.

A point I've just thought if is a user does not need to be registered with the website to get standard new article browser notifications. We need to think about custom alerts for non-logged-in users now, before development begins. Please let me know your ideas for these users? Eg, should they choose notifications on a dedicated page or pop up or widget.
