Windows server - migrate to new server (Answer my questions)

It is better to go with latest Windows Server version if software can run on it. That need to be tested/verified.

I've been in IT for about 20 years and have experience with server migration. I've done a few domain controller replacements, along with file shares, GPOs, printers, etc. 1 - I would move up to 2012R2. 2016 is too new and I'm sure bugs will be popping up. 2 - Yes, but I'll need more info on the web apps part. I presume you have them running in IIS? 3 - Sure thing 4 - I can document anything that is found/moved, along with relevant server info. I may not be the best person for the job due to the fact that I do not have deep IIS knowledge, but I have worked on servers long enough that I can feel my way around after checking out a technet article or two.

hi If you prchase a modern hardware it is better to get windows 2012 because it supports hardware better. But this depends on your requirements. Mostly you are good to go with windows server 2008 R2. Regarding movinf api, I will set up the new server and test it then we move all your apps to use the new server so you do not suffer down times. I work with Windows server and migrations are a standard part of my business. You will need an initial survey to identify everything that is running on the server. To install on a new server you will need to provide all installation media and licenses for any third party applications. It is not always possible to retrieve these from an existing installation. I would always recommend upgrading to the latest operating system. 2008 R2 is in extended support until 14/01/2020 if you wish to keep it. Your choice may also be impacted by the software and APIs and their compatibility. Server 2016 is available but it is very new and not widely deployed yet so the current standard is Server 2012 R2.

what is your estimated time frame on this migration? Question 1 => This depends. If you have an app that will only run on 2008 then you need to keep using 2008. In general upgrading to a higher version of operating system may have an impact on certain old applications and they may not function as earlier. Question 2 => Yes, we can take a look at your current server and then migrate your web apps to the new server Question 3 => Same as above (Do you have any third party software installed as well?) Question 4 => As and when we move/migrate a web app, it will be documented. Although, what is your strategy to move to new server? One shot migrate everything to new? Or migrate one by one over a period of time (time frame depends on how many web apps you have)? Also do you have a database server on 2008 that needs migrated as well? awaiting your response.

Dear sir, I have been in this industry for 12 years and such jobs are my daily practice. This is my first time on this site and hence you can see that I do not have any ratings to show you. I can assure you that if you work with me once, you will always work with me for these kind of projects. Regarding to this project, I think the safest way to migrate between is to virtualize the old one first and then use the new one as a host to run the virtualized system. I have been done this quite a lot of times in my regular job for example I have just successfully migrated our VOIP system (3CX) to the other Windows cluster and it ran totally perfect from there.
