1. Discuss the appearance in Flannery O'Connor's works of the fusion of the religious and the secular, of the divine and the profane, in everyday life.
2. "In most good stories it is the character's personality that creates the action of the story," O'Connor declares in her essay "Writing Short Stories." "If you start with a real personality, a real character, then something is bound to happen." Discuss this statement as it applies to the O'Connor stories you have read.
For example, how does what happens to Hulga in "Good Country People" and what happens to the Grandmother in "A Goodman is Hard to Find" proceed, in some measure, from their personalities? Take into consideration various methods of character presentation O'Connor employs -- exposition, dialogue, setting, gestures & manners, thoughts, action, and opinion of others.

Regarding the ending of "A Good Man is Hard to Find," a critic has this to say: "The ending surprises and disappoints students, but when they return to the story, they discover that the violent ending of this story is inevitable from the very first paragraph" [Jill Baumgaertner, Flannery O'Connor, A proper Scaring (1988) 94].
