Identify a problem at work, on campus, or in your community. This final assignment will ask you to conduct research and write a proposal to address that problem, so try to select a problem that can be reasonably researched and discussed in approximately a 4-5 page proposal (length refers to Intro, Disc., Conclusion only). Additionally, you should incorporate at least two original visuals into the proposal. Here are some general ideas you might consider. Remember, this list is not exhaustive nor very specific; it is meant only to spark some of your own ideas. You may first want to decide which of the three areas (on the job, on campus, or in the community) you feel more comfortable working in and then begin to think about specific topics within that area.
Is there something ineffective with the way your company/campus/community is currently doing something? Is there a better way to do it (e.g., adopting flextime, handling paperwork/procedures differently, offering different or improved services)?
Does your company/campus/community need to purchase or offer something new (something that it has never had before)? For example, do they need to purchase a new piece(s) of equipment, hire new employees, offer new training to current employees, offer students or residents of the community some service they are lacking, institute new guidelines or procedures for doing something, and so on?
Is there a service you can provide that would be of benefit to your company/campus/community? What is the service and how would it be of benefit?
Consult Chapter 18 for more information and a sample proposal. You will eventually write a proposal based on your topic/problem that meets the following criteria:
Addresses a specific problem and is targeted toward a specific reader(s).
Is approximately 3-4 (single-spaced) pages in length--just the proposal itself.
Contains outside research (approx. 3-5 sources) that is cited and documented within the proposal. Research can be library sources, Internet sources, company documents, etc.
Follows APA style of documentation (see Chapter 5 and "Learning Links" for guidelines).
Contains the following attachments: Title Page, Letter or memo of transmittal, Table of Contents, List of Illustrations (if needed), Abstract, Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion/Recommendation, Glossary (if needed), References page (APA), Appendix (if needed). Please note the 3-4 page length requirement refers ONLY to the Introduction/Discussion/Conclusion/Recommendation. See Chapter 18 for an example.
