calculation within a form

I have within a form the following:
<input name="txgain" type="text" size="10" />
and elsewhere in the same form:
<input name="losses" type="text" size="10" />
and a third entry:
<input name="powerout" type="text" size="10" />
What I want to do is bring up a message either pop-up or within the page when the applicant puts in a value in the third box, namely the results of the following calculation:
poweroutdbw=10*log10(powerout);
ERPcalc=poweroutdbw-losses+txgain;
The pop-up message will display ERPcalc rounded to 1 decimal place, and the applicant can either carry on if this is okay, or go back and amend one or more of the three offending fields and get an updated calculation.
All that to happen BEFORE submit is pressed and without affecting other fields that may or may not have been populated in the form.
Alternatively have a button to press within the form to carry out this calculation without affecting the other fields or eventual submit.
I am open to suggestions as to how best to have this facility created.
This is a formmail script which already works.
I am at the stage of adding extra features but need expertise which is beyond my present capability.
Form submission populates a mysql table also sends an email with the form details. All that is working currently.
