I have an app that allows a user to specify a SQL case statement. I want to simplify the UI so they do not need to know the SQL syntax. Instead, I'd like them to use an IF() function silimar to Excel.
I need a function called ConvertIF() that accepts a string that may or may not contain an IF() statement and parse just the IF() into correct SQL Server CASE syntax. The IF() statement has the following parms
IF(logical_test,value_if_true,value_if_false)
Nested IF() statements should be supported.
For example,
strToParse = "[FName]+' '+[LName]+IF([LNAME]<='M',' - GroupA-M',' - GroupN-Z')"
ConvertIF(strToParse) returns :
"[FName]+' '+[LName]+CASE WHEN [LNAME]<='M' THEN ' - GroupA-M' ELSE ' - GroupN-Z' END
strToParse = "'Hello ' + [FName] + IF([Age]<12,' You are a Minor',IF([Age]<20,'You are a teenager','You are an adult'))"
ConvertIF(strToParse) returns :
'Hello ' + [FName] + CASE WHEN [Age]<12 THEN 'You are a minor' ELSE CASE WHEN [Age}<20 THEN 'You are a teenager' ELSE 'You are an adult' END END
