Demonstrate various overlay and distance measuring functions on Google or Bing maps

Hi, I'm a webgis developer. I recommend to do this as a client-server application and keep your overlays in a spatial database like postgis that can do the more complicated geometry tricks you require and send the results to the client. I usually use on the server: -postgresql+postgis database to kepp geographical data and overlays -php for custom queries -mapserver for serving maps as standard webservices On the client: -OpenLayers for the map client that can do a lot more than plaing google api or bing at the same time displaying any background map available. -GeoExt or Jquery UI to make widgets around the map controlling it. I would create a separate control/button for each function. As per your requirements: 1. This we call a buffer zone and you would be able to either enter a value for the circle size or drag it on the map. 2. You would draw a polygon on the map and then falls back to 1. 3. You draw a line and then 1. Transparency, colors of fill or line is no problem to set. When you draw a shape you will be prompted to enter a priority. 4. uk map of postcodes in a vector format. should be available from the ordnance survey. This we'll load into the database and query this table as the user places a point or enters code 5. The closest overlay can be queried in the db and returned to client. 6. I have been working on similar projects for more than 10 years. I would use an open source library instead of google maps or BING if you are agreed. I would develop the map without any need of code behind [no .NET or Java] minimizing the impact on a server and the maintainability. Depending on magnitude of the number of features that you would like to draw/manage on the map, I would use a file based geospatial enabled database and its native functions for measuring distances and areas. In case of too many circles I would use the cluster's technique for visualizing the features on the screen. Using the proposed open source library the site would run on any web server or cloud environment, there would be no additional costs for deploying the site even with commercial purposes. As essential architecture it is needed just the database and the web server with possibility to reach external web services for having basemaps [like google maps or similar]. best regards, Luca
