Task Description: The purpose of this website is to allow you to explore an area of entomology, under the topic Insect Movement, Feeding and Mating, that interests you specifically. Below is a list of possible topics. You could pick one of these topics or create your own. If you use images that you have not yourself produced, attribute the image. You must indicate whether the image is available through a commons-type licence. All projects should include a reference list. Insect Movement, Feeding and Mating The tripod gait is the basic gait of insects. How is it modified for different functions such as in rapidly running cockroaches? How do mantids target their prey when striking? How did the different periodically-emerging cicadas evolve? Why do they show 13 and 17 year cycles? Is cannibalism a common way of obtaining food in insects? How do crickets or cicadas use sound to attract or find mates? Jumping spiders (I know, not an insect) appear to be capable of intricate planning tasks. Is this so? What is the stangest mating system you can find among the insects? Why is it unusual and discuss how/why has it evolved?
