Yellow Ribbons and A Legacy

She graced the 1986 Snap Elections when she took hold of the presidency from the Dicatator. Since then, she took a leap of faith from being a mother of five to being a mother of a nation. She was instant celebirty and icon of democracy.
It is not easy doing something that’s new to you especially if it’s something of very great responsibility, but the late former President Corazon Aquino accepted the challenge of leading her country out of the filthy mud of political and socio-economic chaos brought by dictatorship, where it once laid. Life was not easy for obstacles flooded her way like the series of coup d’ etats that bombarded her administration but it didn’t stop her from doing the things that she believed she was appointed to do- restore what has been damaged for her people. Through her strong faith to the Almighty, prayer and perseverance, she brought changes to what was before a torn nation. Indeed, she was able to stand up for her fellow Filipinos.
In the Philipines today, when you say democracy, we say “Cory”, the woman who faced the challenge and freed us from the Iron Hand, like Moses who brought the Israelites out of Egypt. She was the Philippines oses and she was sent by God to free the poeple from all the hardships they were going through. And yes, who wold not feel secure in the hands of a ruler who always made it seem okay? Afterall, things have to move on and all these shall pass. True enough, it did but the woman clad in a sunny yellow dress reflected delight and peace continued to be the country’s light in this journey of freedom. She never failed to remind everyone that democracy is one prayer away. Her consistent display of clamness gave everyone else a break from all the troubles brought about by politics and socio-economic matters. Furthermore, “Cory” would mean advocacy for peace.
In the same manner that she was the nation’s guide when it comes to democracy, through it all, she became the symbol of the Filipinos want of ultimate freedom, not only in the truest sense of the word, but also with the other aspects that the country embraces. At the same time being the light, she became the voice that Filipinos want total independence.
The yellow ribbons poured once more in the streets as the Icon of Democracy was brought to her final rsting place. After years of struggle, she is now free to smie and to think not about the nation’s burden anymore. The same people who gave hee the presidency were the same people who accompanied her to her last. May they also be the same people who will continue what she had started. True enough, “Cory” will never be erased from history and will always be remembered. ~entry for essay writing contest in our college.
