c program needs to calculate the filesize of a file about to generated

I have a c program that needs to inform the user about how much data is about to be generated based on the parameters the user specifies. The code I started with worked well until I had to expand the program to handle stop early and literal functions. Now the program has turned into a bit of a mess. Stage 1 is to get the code to work. Stage 2 is to point out areas in the program where I can do things better. Stage 3 is to help finish the program by adding a couple of missing features. If you look at the code and really think stage 2 needs to come first I can adapt. This posting only covers stages 1 and 2. If you do a good job on this we can negotiate stage 3. PS I use Linux as my development platform so I know the code compiles with gcc. I am not sure about any other platform. To answer some of the questions I have gotten: 1. The program is about 2200 lines long which includes about 200 lines of comments. 2. The program only uses the standard c libraries. 3. I use gcc on BackTrack Linux to compile the program although any Linux distribution should work fine. 4. There are no warnings from the compiler (gcc -Wall -lm -pthread -std=c99 program.c -o program). 5. The program generates the correct filesize output for some options but not others. I will send the sepific commands that work and don't. 6. The program was originally designed to complete a series of steps. Some users requested the program be able to stop early. For example if there were 1000 steps to complete, the user can tell the program to stop at step 357. 7. Since I can't show you the code until I choose a winner I am willing to be flexible on time. There will be no hard feelings if you look at the code and say no way. 8. Stage 2 is code clean up. I would like you look at the code and point areas that could be simplified or enhanced or reused with slight modifications. 9. The program basically shuffles letters or strings around based on user specified parameters.
