Developed by Microsoft within their .NET framework, C# is a simple, general purpose programming language intended for use in creating software components. Originally referred to internally by Microsoft employees as ‘COOL’, an acronym for ‘C-Like, Object Oriented Language’, the name was later changed (due to trademark concerns) in July 2000 to C#, coinciding with the announcement of .NET. The most recent version of C#, Version 6, was released in July 2015.
