  are the hinges on the edges of 8x8 area necessary or can i change it?

  Imagine the shape in the template is the surface of a table. I want to find the best way to fold up/pack away, in the smallest area possible, this shape.

     The suggestion of imagining the shape as the surface of a table was just that. I didn't say the shape WAS the surface of a table. If you fold the north & south wings up & inwards, on hinges, & the east & west wings down & inwards, on hinges, this would make a much smaller shape as it is still solid. Using your dimensions it would be 8px X 8px X 3px. I was hoping to get a better result than that. I don't know if the winning entry will use 4 hinges or something completely different.
